What is Liquified Petroleum Gas?

Liquified Petrolium Gas

LP Gas is a by-product of the petroleum refinery process and is made up of a butane and propane mixture. In its natural form it is odorless, and so an additive is introduced that gives LP Gas it’s distinctive gas smell. This is mainly done for safety purposes so that a leak may be detected.

LPG is heavier than air, therefore it acts similar to water that will accumulate in the lowest area. This is one reason why there are so many safety regulations around the placement of gas cylinders. One of these is that a gas cylinder may not be installed closer than 2 meters from a drain. Other safety precautions are that you may not install gas cylinders closer than 1 meter from a door or window and also 5 meters from a point of ignition.

All gas installations must be done by a qualified gas installer and all installations must have a COC. The validity of an installer can be checked by contacting LPGSASA. All installers must have a valid installers card.

A gas installation of up to 19kg may be installed in a ventilated cupboard in a house.

A very popular application is that of a gas hob or stove with a 9kg cylinder in a cupboard next to the hob. This is very often done to convert from electricity to gas.

Why would you want to switch to gas? Here are a few reasons.
